Midwest Meets Manhattan: Pick Your Own Orchard
I think we can all agree that one of the most pivotal points of the Fall season is plucking the perfect pumpkin or stretching to the top of the branch for that flawless Fuiji. Moving out east, I was most excited for fall because the East Coast boasts some of the most picturesque foliage in the country. The Weed Orchards & Winery is no exception, nestled in the small town of Marlboro, NY, right alongside the Hudson Valley in upstate NY. The Weed Orchard & Winery is located at the base of the majestic Marlboro Mountains and was established in 1913; it is the epitome of the fall esthetic. Not only does it have an expansive scenic view of the fall foliage and a glimmering pond across the road, it also boasts a Farm to Table Café, Homemade Wines, Homegrown Hard Ciders, Local Craft Beer, Fruit and Vegetable Picking, Live Music, Hayrides, and Barbeque.
Open 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Sunday for pick your own fruits and vegetables and Friday through Sunday in the Restaurant and Winery, Weed Orchards & Winery is complementary to everyone’s schedule. Being only an hour and a half drive from Manhattan alongside the Hudson Valley, it is a quick, beautiful break from the New York hustle and bustle.
Currently at the Weed Orchards & Winery, you can expect to find Cortland, Golden and Red Delicious, Jonagold, Fuji, Rome, Empires, and Mutzu apples in season as well as Pumpkins, Gourds, and Butternut Squash. I found my fair share of plump pumpkins and crisp, sweet Fuji apples.
The 5th generation Weed Family owner, John Weed, has been farming the collective 100+ acreage alongside his brother, parents, and grand-parents since he was a child. Weed Orchards & Winery diversified in 2000 by opening the “Pick-Your Own” experience. As mentioned earlier, the Weed family has since added a bakery, café, weekend barbeques, festivals, live music, hayrides, a corn maze, petting zoo, and other amenities. The newest addition to the family farm is the Winery that opened in 2014. There, you can enjoy NY State bottled beer, hard cider, and wine.
John was extremely welcoming and accommodating and offered me a sample of the new Weed Orchards & Winery Homegrown Hard Cider. The crisp, effervescent cider was a refreshing compliment to the beautifully clear fall day; a definite must have fall beverage.
I enjoyed the Orchard on a Thursday afternoon, beating much of the crowds, but missing the Winery and Restaurant hours. Luckily the Winery and Restaurant are open throughout the year allowing me to return to the quaint family farm anytime I am needing a breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively.
